Swedes and the Internet – RCS missing but may reshape 2025's landscape

The recently released "Svenskarna och internet 2024" report from the Internet Foundation discusses popular messaging channels such as Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Signal, and Telegram, but an important platform is missing – RCS (Rich Communication Services).

Although RCS has the potential to transform how we communicate in the near future, it is not mentioned in the report, which leaves much to be desired in understanding the current and future development of mobile communication in Sweden.

Statistics from the report: Usage of communication apps

  • Facebook Messenger is Sweden's most used communication app, followed by WhatsApp.

  • WhatsApp has shown the most significant increase in usage between 2022 and 2024, with overall usage rising from 36% in 2022 to 46% in this year's measurement.

  • Nearly half of Swedes have used WhatsApp over the past year, with 3 in 10 using the app weekly and 1 in 6 using it daily.

RCS – A potential shift in mobile communication

Although the report shows increasing WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger usage, there is a significant chance this could change. RCS is the next generation of messaging, already available on many Android devices and iOS. It will become increasingly important in mobile communication in the coming years. It offers advanced features such as interactive messages, support for high-resolution multimedia, brand profiling, and verified senders – capabilities that could completely change how businesses and consumers interact.

Since this year's report no longer provides statistics on business messaging (the last available was in the 2022 report), we are missing data on how mobile users currently interact with companies – something that may change as RCS becomes the new standard for business communication.

Older users and security – RCS is a solution

One of the most prominent trends in the Internet Foundation's report is older users' concern about security issues such as smishing, fraud, and fake messages. RCS could play a critical role in creating a safer digital environment for older generations.

Verified senders in RCS enable users to easily identify legitimate businesses and avoid fraudulent messages often seen in channels like SMS. Additionally, companies can use brand identification to ensure their communication is not confused with smishing attempts, providing users greater security.

RCS will soon offer enhanced security through encrypted messaging, which is especially important for older users. The report shows that older women, particularly those over 75, struggle more with adopting new technology. This group is also more vulnerable to digital threats like fraud and phishing. With RCS, these users can feel more secure as messages are encrypted, and the sender can be verified, reducing the risk of being deceived by unscrupulous actors.

The future of RCS in Sweden

With features that improve security and offer a more interactive user experience, RCS is poised to become a central part of Sweden's digital landscape. Unfortunately, the Internet Foundation's report did not mention RCS as a new channel in the market. We will likely see increased RCS adoption in the coming years, especially as more rich RCS features become available.

We hope future reports will include a more detailed analysis of RCS and its impact on Swedes' communication from a security and user perspective.
